According to the information provided by the Federal Building and Housing Register, the heating of the Swiss residential building has fallen below a brand: the current overview of the most powerful heating system has shown for the first time since 6 October 2026 that less than half of the residential building is heated with heating oil or gas.
For comparison: In the building and housing statistics for the end of 2025, the Federal Office for Statistics still called 33 percent of buildings with oil heating and 17 percent with gas heating – together half. Each fourth residential building had a heat pump. In three quarters of the residential buildings created during the last ten years, one was installed.
The BFS identified for 2025 that 58 percent of households with fossil fuels were heated, although the proportion of buildings was about 50 percent. A multi-family house counts in building statistics once, but can include many households.
The decline in fossil heating systems shows a shift in the building stock. The new threshold for itself says little about costs, emissions or the speed of future conversions.
