Switzerland and the United Kingdom held their strategic dialogue in Bern on 16 October. State Secretary Alexandre Fasel met Lord Wood of Anfield, the UK minister responsible for foreign affairs. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) said the agenda covered bilateral relations as well as European and international issues.
The discussions included politics, the economy, financial services and trade. Negotiations on a free-trade agreement had concluded in July 2026, but the dialogue statement does not say the agreement has been ratified or entered into force. The financial-services agreement between the two countries has applied since January 2026 and is intended to improve market access in the UK for Swiss providers.
Other topics included mobility, democracy, security, artificial intelligence and the international AI summit planned in Geneva for 2027 under Swiss hosting. Switzerland–EU relations and the UK–EU reset were also discussed. The FDFA said an exchange was planned ahead of the OSCE ministerial meeting in Lugano on 3–4 December.
The statement records a regular political dialogue, not a new agreement or concrete joint measure adopted on 16 October. The next steps for economic ties will therefore include implementing the financial-services agreement already in force and advancing the negotiated free-trade agreement.
