A tribute on the occasion of his announced resignation
On 2 October, Guy Parmelin announced his resignation at the end of December 2026, then he will be a member of the national government for eleven years and have completed a presidential year for the second time. At his media conference, he declared that health reasons are not decisive for the decision, but he feels less energy.
Parmelin's life story begins in Bursins in the canton of Waadt, where he was born on 9 November 1959. After the maturity he completed an agricultural teaching and acquired the Federal Master's Diploma in Agriculture and Winemaking in 1985.
From 1994 to 2003, Parmelin belonged to the Great Council of the Waadtland, followed by the National Council until 2015. Between 2000 and 2004, he gave the SVP of his home canton. On 9 December 2015, the Federal Assembly elected him to the state government.
This career deserves attention and shows how much political experience is created outside the federal city. Anyone who leads a company and is engaged in his community directly meets the consequences of state decisions.
In early 2016, he took over the Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports. Since 2019, he has been head of the Department of Economics, Education and Research.
